Guidance and Counseling

The focus of the programme is the production of high-level research-oriented guidance counselors / social workers who are committed in the discipline. The activities of the GUC Department are guided by overarching vision, mission, aims and objectives that are periodically revisited to ensure currency and authenticity in line with GUC intervention techniques and changes in a complex global society so as to encourage dedication, collaboration, and also provide world-class guidance and counseling services and social justice.

The Department will be world leader in assisting its learners to develop the knowledge, skills and disposition necessary to become effective and competent guidance counselors who can provide necessary intervention, leadership, educational and other related services in the society. The department envisions a society in which guidance and counseling equips learners with psychological stamina, knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the future well-being of the individuals and the society.

The program’s mission is to educate professional counselors to work with children and youth in school settings / other education-related areas and with persons facing other social challenges. As such, our program curriculum draws from foundational content in rehabilitation, school, and mental health counseling.  Through leadership, advocacy, collaboration, use of data, and action, our graduates will be competent at identifying and overcoming barriers that impede equal access to educational, social, environmental, and career opportunities for all persons. Our graduates will be dedicated to promoting and facilitating the personal achievement, empowerment, and quality of life of all the populations we serve.

The aim of the Department is to prepare world-class guidance and counseling professionals who are known for the quality of their intervention and research as well as for their contributions to community development.

1. To prepare counselors to work effectively with diverse populations, their family-members, and their communities as well as program administrators and all other stakeholders.
2. To prepare counselors who possess excellent skills in counseling. Graduates will possess knowledge of theory and research, skills in appraisal, and expertise in intervention techniques.
3. To prepare counselors who have the knowledge and skills necessary to practice within rehabilitation, school, and mental health counseling programs.  
4. To prepare counselors who demonstrate healthy self-awareness and understanding, and who understand the importance of self-care for counselors.  
5. To prepare counselors who counsel within the ethical guidelines of national and international guidance and associations/organizations.
6. To prepare counselors who counsel with sensitivity, caring, and appropriate approaches for diverse environments and populations.  
7. To prepare counselors who consult and advocate on behalf of the client as well as assist people to advocate for themselves.

Graduates in guidance and counseling secure jobs as managers and administrators at different levels of Education. Some of them are employed at educational-related centers, Ministries of Education, and other Government and non-government agencies while some of them establish private schools.

Applicants must be holders of a Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Upon successful completion of class work, submission of an internship report and defence of a research project.
